B Platoon Handles Fatal MVA on Haddonfield-Berlin Road

On January 19 at approximately 1200 hours, CHFD members were dispatched for the report of a motor vehicle crash at Haddonfield-Berlin Road at Morris Drive. Squad Company 13, BLS 1396, Medic 44, and Battalion 13 were advised of a motor vehicle crash involving a dump truck and an SUV. While still en route to the call, responding units were advised of a dump truck that had flipped onto it's side on top of an SUV trapping an unknown amount of occupants in the SUV. Rescue Company 13, Ladder Company 1344, and Helmrich Towing were requested to the scene by AFC Robert Giorgio with the report of people trapped. First arriving units confirmed a dump truck loaded with sand overturned on top of an SUV with one occupant trapped in the SUV. The driver of the dump truck did not require extrication and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Squad Company members began initial stabilization efforts and began mitigating the highway hazards that were on the ground, particularly diesel fuel and gasoline. On their arrival, members from Rescue Company 13 continued the efforts to stabilize the dump truck utilizing chains fastened to the frame rail on the "dirty side" of the truck that were then attached to the 20 ton winch on the back of Rescue 13 and tensioned to prevent the dump truck from crushing the SUV any further. Rescue Company officer Lt. West deployed the confined space search camera to evaluate the crushed SUV for number of occupants and their condition. Rescue Company members assisted by Ladder Company and Squad Company members used 6x6 wood to crib the underside of the dump truck for additional protection to the SUV. Helmrich Towing arrived with a large vehicle wrecker/crane and worked with CHFD members to wrap the dump truck and lift it off the SUV back to an upright position. After removing the dump truck from the SUV, one occupant was found in the vehicle deceased. CHFD members from Squad 13 and Rescue 13 used the Genesis spreaders and cutters to remove the victim from the SUV. The crash remains under investigation by the Cherry Hill Police Departement and the New Jersey State Police.

Just past midnight on January 16th in the 1st block of Birchwood Park Drive S., A-group Squrt 31, Ladder 44, Squad 13, Engine 22, BLS 1393 and Battalion 13 recieved an assignment for a dwelling fire.

Squrt 31 responded on the Cherry Hill Police tones and were enroute before the tones dropped for the dwelling box.

Venting Completed to assist interior companies

Upon arrival Squrt 31 reported only a light smoke condition visiable from the street. Additional information from homeowner was that it was a bedroom fire on the second floor.

Battalion 13 arrived as Squrt 31 was stretching an 1 3/4 handline to the front door and assumed command. Ladder 44 arrived and stoodby to open up the second floor.

31's officer confirmed it was a bedroom fire contained to the room and extinguished the fire.
Companies checked for extension and completed the overhaul. Fire is under investigation by the county Fire Marshal.

On Wednesday evening, January 4, 2012 the Cherry Hill Fire Department held the promotional ceremony for Battalion Chief Timothy McGeady, Battalion Chief Montrell Haldemann and Captain Jason Houck. In attendance were family and friends of all three, along with fellow firefighters and fire officers of the Cherry Hill Fire Department.

The evening began with some opening remarks, Chief Robert Giorgio welcomed the family and friends who were in attendance that evening. Chief Giorgio then spoke on the process these men have worked through to achieve this opportunity and what lies ahead for the newly promoted Battalion Chiefs and Captain. Following this, each Officer was asked to stand and take the oath of office before having their badge pinned on by a loved one.

Firefighter I Graduation for Joshua Rosenblum

On Friday, December 16, 2011 the annual Camden County Fire Academy's Firefighter I graduation commenced with Probationary Firefighter Joshua Rosenblum of the Cherry Hill Fire Department in attendance. Firefighter Rosenblum spent his weekends during the fall semester attending the Camden County Fire Academy's Firefighter I Class.

Firefighter I is a semester long class that teaches all candidate firefighters the skills and knowledge required to be a firefighter in the State of New Jersey. Classes consist of a combination of lecture and hands on training. Students are required to show understanding and proficiency via both written tests and hands on practical skill testing. The final weeks of class the students take a state written exam and participate in live fire evolutions, where they demonstrate the skills learned.

Firefighter Rosenblum was fortunate enough to be taught by several Cherry Hill Firefighters at the Camden County Fire Academy. Firefighter Kurk Tharp - Squrt 31/Rescue 13 is the Course Coordinator, Firefighters Zach Houck - Squrt 51, Bill Trotman Squrt 31/Rescue 13, Captain Jason Houck - Squrt 31/Rescue 13, Lieutenant Wade Houlihan - Ladder 44, and Retired Captain Bill Walker are all Firefighter I Instructors at the Academy.

While attending the Academy Firefighter Rosenblum also fulfilled requirements as a Volunteer Firefighter in the Cherry Hill Fire Department. These requirements consist of spending a certain amount of hours riding along with the career firefighters in both the engine and ladder companies. During these hours FF Rosenblum was required to answer emergency calls, demonstrate and practice the skills he was learning in class via training, and continue to learn the ways of the Cherry Hill Fire Department. Firefighter Rosenblum was specifically mentored by Captain Ray Sooy of Squrt 51, who spent many hours ensuring Firefighter Rosenblum was progressing well with his studies and training, and answering any questions he may have. His guidance and support were greatly appreciated by Firefighter Rosenblum.

12.31.11 - Battalion Chief Stallfort’s Last Day

Thirty years of completing anything is an accomplishment worthy of mention. A 30+ year career in the fire service is an amazing and rare achievement. Battalion Chief William Stallfort is serving his last tour of duty with the Cherry Hill Fire Department today after more than 30 years as a firefighter – which will be a challenge to summarize in just a few short paragraphs here. What began in 1975 as a Junior Firefighter position, as a “way to play softball with the firefighter’s teams” led to him being hired in 1980. Today, his service can be recognized as a career that helped shape the Cherry Hill Fire Department, especially its’ technical rescue teams, and define a style that’s admired by the firefighters who call him “Chief”.

For the last 30 years, Chief Stallfort has served in an industry where the daily work offers few second chances. Many have observed that those in other careers get to make mistakes – not true with those of us in the emergency services. It’s permissible when: deliverymen; teachers; bankers and the athletes we admire so much; make mistakes. In contrast, we believe that in the fire service we need to “bat 1,000 percent” every day, on every call. Chief Stallfort’s mindset, and the ideals he instilled in those he leads, set the tone for this type of success each and every shift they come to work: Training, Plan-ahead, Training, Preparedness, and Training – basically complete readiness….with some Training to round it out.

In the past two years, Chief Stallfort redesigned the way his Platoon trained together. Members of C-Platoon have been training nearly every tour in what Chief Stallfort called; the “bread and butter” evolutions of arriving on scene, making an accurate and correct size up, placing hose lines in service and performing search and rescue and fire control. Each time there was always a little surprise or twist to keep his officers guessing. But the theory and practice of performing the simple everyday pulling hose lines and maneuvering them into service was not lost on the firefighters of C-platoon.

It was once said that the best leaders are willing to walk beside those they lead. Well, any firefighter can tell you good leadership comes from integrity – where you’re willing to do whatever you ask others to do. No one espoused these ideals more than Chief Stallfort. His firefighters were used to his participation in his own training assignments and having him right behind you on incidents big and small. You never had to question if he was there – you knew he would be. You never had to question what the assignment was – get the job done!

Chief Stallfort’s service also extends outside of Cherry Hill; serving New Jersey and our country as a member of New Jersey’s Urban Search and Rescue - Task Force One. On September 11th, 2001, Task Force One was one of the first teams pressed into service at Ground Zero. Just recently, at our own 10 year memorial service for September 11, Chief Stallfort relayed how he arrived in New York as a Team Leader in charge of about 7 or 8 people, and received an on the spot “field promotion” to Team Manager. He was placed in charge of about 60 or 70 people – and asked to lead them during the most horrific scene any of us will ever imagine. For those of us that work with him every day, it’s easy to believe how clear of a decision it was to promote him and rely on him that day.

In his personal and off-duty life, Chief Stallfort continues to prove integrity counts. He is a devoted husband; and he and his wife, Tiziana are the parents of two successful and accomplished young women. Chief Stallfort has been asked to lead department forces at many events, celebrations and services and has been a consistent team member of the Cherry Hill Firefighters softball team (remember why he joined in the first place?) helping them win multiple seasons and tournaments.

For the past 30 years, Chief Stallfort always commanded – and earned – respect. Today, he not only has our respect, but also our gratitude. Thank you Chief Stallfort, and best wishes in your retirement.

Car vs Building Rescue Assignment

The vehicle left the roadway and struck the historic gatehouse of Colestown Cemetary.

Just prior to 1900 hours on Wednesday, December 28, "A" Group's Squrt 1351 and BLS 1392 were dispatched to the intersection of Church Road and North Kings Highway for a motor vehicle accident with injuries. While en route, additional calls reported that the driver of one of the vehicles was entrapped inside their car. The incident was upgraded to a “rescue assignment,” adding Battalion 13, Rescue 13, EMS 13, and an ALS unit to the response.

Upon arrival, Squrt 1351 reported a three car collision, with one vehicle off the roadway. That vehicle had impacted the gatehouse of the Colestown Cemetary and its driver was still pinned inside.

The crews from Squrt 1351 and BLS 1392 stabilized the vehicle and began providing medical attention to the driver. The crews also checked on the condition of the occupants of the other vehicles involved in the collision who were reportedly uninjured.

Squrt 1351’s crew began removing the driver’s door to the entrapped patient’s car using hydraulic rescue tools. As the balance of the assignment arrived on scene, Rescue 13’s crew brought additional tools to the scene, and assisted in the extrication effort. After approximately 20 minutes, the driver was removed from the vehicle and transported by BLS 1392.

The CHPD are investigating the cause of the collision.

CHFD Welcomes home more troops

On Christmas Eve Cherry Hill Firefighters had the privilege to welcome back some hometown heroes for the holidays. The Lamanna family from Kingston Estates has four sons; John, Justin, Jesse and Joe. Three of their boys proudly serve our country covering all over the globe and have not been together for Christmas in quite a few years. John, a medical Sergeant in the Army, is currently stationed in South Korea. Jesse, enlisted in the Navy, is stationed in California. Joe, a Hospital Corpsman Third Class enlisted in the Air Force, is stationed in Spain. Cherry Hill American Legion Post #372, Warriors Watch, Yellow Ribbon Club, Nam Knights, Last Patrol and AMVets were some of the organizations represented in the parade leading to the Lamanna residence. With sirens, horns and motorcycle roaring down the street, neighbors came out of their house to see the celebration. The entire Lamanna family came out as everyone lined up to shake the hands of these brave young men. Mayor Platt read a proclamation and drew a rousing applause as he motioned toward the Lamanna family and stated “This is America!!” The Cherry Hill Fire Department salutes the Lamanna family for their selfless service.

Santa Comes to Cherry Hill

Since last Thursday, December 15, through this upcoming Wednesday, December 21, Santa Claus has been touring the streets of Cherry Hill, escorted by the Cherry Hill Firefighters and Fire Officers. Normally the sound of sirens and horns accompanied by flashing lights means the firefighters are rushing towards some emergency in town. However, in the evening and afternoon hours these noises have served the purpose of alerting all the boys and girls of Cherry Hill, and some adults of course, that Santa Claus is coming to town.

On one special note, soon to be retiring Battalion Chief, William Stallfort, stopped into the quarter's of Squad 13 on his day off to help with the escorting of Santa Claus. Occasionally while the firefighters are escorting Santa, emergencies occur requiring the firefighters and Santa to quickly rush off to protect the community; and yes even Santa helps. As was the case on Thursday, December 15, B/C Stallfort and the members of Squad 13 "A" took in several calls in their local with Santa in tow. Now, don't fret if you see Santa and the firefighters leaving for an emergency; they will return to finish Santa's trip through your neighborhood at a later date.

Vehicle crashes in to private dwelling

At 0901 hrs. on December 10th (A Platoon) Ladder 24, BLS 92 and ALS were dispatched to Sherwood Avenue for a motor vehicle accident. Ladder 24 and CHPD arrived to find a SUV crashed in to the side of an occupied private dwelling. One passenger of the vehicle was treated for minor bumps and bruises by BLS 92. The vehicle narrowly missed the electric and gas utility services to the house. Inspection of the building was turned over to Cherry Hill construction office and the accident is being investigated by CHPD. Units operating on scene: EMS 13, Ladder 24, BLS 92 & CHPD.

12.9.11 – Well-Known National Fire Chief Visits Cherry Hill Fire Department

Ask most people to name a celebrity or famous person and you will get a barrage of answers ranging across the sports, music and entertainment industries. Ask someone to name a famous firefighter, and the answers will come less eagerly – if at all. However; if you ask someone that’s been in the fire service for any amount of time, especially a firefighter that reads fire service articles and fire command text books, a few well known, “famous” firefighters or chief’s usually pop up. One such well known Fire Chief is Alan Brunacini. Chief Brunacini stopped by the Cherry Hill Fire Department on December 9th to discuss emerging trends in the fire service and review the CHFD’s recent venture into Brunacini’s own “Blue Card Training” for command officers.

Chief Brunacini joined the Phoenix Fire Department in 1958, rose through the ranks and was Chief of Department from 1978 to 2006, retiring after a nearly 50 year career. He has served on numerous nationwide fire service boards, committees and commissions and was the past Chairman of the National Fire Protection Association; N.F.P.A. He is the author of many fire service textbooks, some deemed mandatory for those seeking promotion to leadership roles in firefighting. These texts include: Fire Command; Command Safety, Timeless Tactical Truths, Essentials of Fire Department Customer Service; and the Anatomy and Physiology of Leadership.

Over the past 6 months, Cherry Hill Fire Officers have been training with the “Blue Card Training” program created and taught by Chief Brunacini and his two sons, John and Nick. Blue Card is designed to first instruct and then certify fire officers who serve in the role of incident commander or that supervises and manages emergency and hazard zone operations for everyday, local events. Blue Card incorporates 50 hrs of online instruction with 3-6 days of in-class simulation training. Chief Brunacini stopped by to review the department’s progress and the live simulation work areas. One simulation actually utilizes a department command vehicle and asks the perspective commander to make decisions just as he would in that vehicle on a live incident – which is on a video screen in front of him. CHFD Officers are set to begin using the simulators in early 2012.

A Platoon exctricates trapped motorist

On Sunday November 27th, Ladder 24 and BLS 92 were dispatched to South Kings Highway and Park Boulevard for a reported Motor Vehicle Accident. The assignment was upgraded to a rescue assignment after CHPD arrived and reported one occupant trapped. Ladder 24 arrived and confirmed the reports and began rescue operations. Rescue 13 and Ladder 24 extricated the occupant in 5 minutes and EMS transported to Cooper Trauma. Units operating on scene were: Battalion 13, Ladder 24, Rescue 13, EMS 13, BLS 92, BLS 96, BLS 1457, Medic 44, Medic 400 and CHPD.

11.17.11: 2nd Annual C-Platoon Turkey Bowl

Typically, the Firefighters & Officers on C-Platoon are living up to this quote by training to meet the emergency needs of the residents of Cherry Hill. On the rainy Thursday morning of November 17th, they instead met, once again, for the East v. West Battalion, “touch” football game known as the “Turkey Bowl”. While last year’s game ended in a tie score, the result for 2011 was a one-sided scoring affair ending with the West Battalion outscoring the East by two or three touchdowns. Once again, each team had their “super stars” that held their teams together, but all participated and enjoyed in the gentle and peaceful game.

At the end of the game, and overshadowing the score, was the presentation of the game ball, signed by all personnel, to retiring Battalion Chief William Stallfort. The Turkey Bowl - and most of the proud things accomplished by C-Platoon day to day during their responses across Cherry Hill are rooted in the leadership and guidance provided by Chief Stallfort. But, more on that to come later……

Dumpster Fire in Engine 22's Local

On Tuesday, November 8^th B-Platoon's Engine 1322 responded to a reported dumpster fire at the Towers of Windsor Toledo building. Upon arrival Engine1322 reported a 20 yard construction dumpster heavily involved with fire. Engine 1322 stretched a 1 ¾ inch bumper line and extinguished the fire quickly with tank water. There were no serious exposures at this incident.

On Monday October 24th, Ladder 1324 was alerted to King Avenue for a vehicle fire. Upon arrival Ladder 1324's crew observed a sport utility vehicle with fire in the engine and passenger compartments. On October 22^nd, Engine 1322 and BLS 1392 responded to Knollwood Drive for a motor vehicle accident. A vehicle was reported to be overturned and on fire. Cherry Hill Police arrived on scene first and reported that the driver and passenger were out of the car and not injured. Upon arrival Engine 1322 confirmed a vehicle on its side with fire showing. Engine 1322’s crew placed the 1 ¾ inch bumper line in service and extinguished the fire.

Smoke from air filter

On October 8th, at 1610 hrs in the 1900 block of Old Cuthbert Road, a call was received for a building fire. Squrt 31, Ladder 44 and Squad 13 along with Battalion 13 and BLS 1393 responded. Battalion 13 arrived to find smoke showing in the upper story of the facility. He was met by the production operator stating that they had a burnt out blower unit.

After further investigation by Squrt 31's crew, they found an active fire on the 4th story level involving an air filter unit. The unit was showing in excess of 500 degrees. The manufacturing process was shut down to allow the air filter unit to cool down so that it could be accessed.

When the unit cooled down to be able to safely open it, the companies accessed the cyclone and found an active fire involving the air filter socks. The crews had stretched a water line to that level and proceeded to extinguish all active fire.

The air filters had to be removed one by one so that complete extinguishment could be accomplished. The companies completed the overhaul and turned the facility back over to management.

Haz Mat Unit Receives Federal DOT Grant for Advanced Training

Squad 13 received federal money from the Department of Transportation's 2010 HMEP (Hazardous Material Emergency Preparedness) Grant to provide members with three (3) 2-day classes on advanced air monitoring and incident assessments.

The program was developed to provide personnel with key training opportunities that covered a full gamut of various incidents they are required to respond to. Included, were topics such as; Transportation Emergencies, Clandestine Drug Labs, Terrorism, Radiation Emergencies and Large scale Hazardous Material Releases.

9.27.2011 - Cherry Hill Units respond to Leaking Liquid Oxygen Cylinder at the Saltzman House

Ladder 1344 was dispatched to a report of a leaking oxygen cylinder inside a 1st floor unit of the Saltzman house. Once on location, they were presented with a liquid oxygen cylinder actively leaking vapors inside one of the apartments. The occupants were removed from the apartment and the area was secured while waiting for the arrival of Cherry Hill's Haz Mat Unit.

Members of the Haz Mat Unit made their way into the apartment and were presented with a home therapy tank actively leaking, creating a high oxygen atmosphere. Crews quickly removed the cylinder to the outside and had the Ladder crew ventilate the area to bring levels back down to normal conditions.

Once on the outside, members assessed the cylinder and found a relief valve stuck partially in the open position. The Haz Mat team reset the valve to stop the leak and requested the responsible party to respond out and remove the cylinder from the property.

September 2011: Firefighters Train On New Rescue Equipment

During the month of September, all Cherry Hill Firefighters received training on new equipment that aids in serious motor vehicle accidents. When firefighters arrive at an accident scene where victims are trapped inside their vehicle, or there will be an extended period of time removing them, they perform stabilization on the vehicle. Vehicles involved in accidents can easily move, fall over, or slip on uneven surfaces depending on where and how they come to rest. By stabilizing the vehicle, it removes as much risk as possible of moving the vehicle during the rescue process that might further injure the patient. Stabilization includes many things; from simply making sure the vehicle is turned off and in park; all the way up to building intricate cribbing systems for overturned vehicles. Firefighters reviewed all these systems and techniques.

Highlighted in this training was the use of a new type of stabilizer that saves valuable time setting up translating to quicker extrications and more rapid patient transports to the emergency rooms. The new tool firefighters worked with is known as a Twist-Lock Vehicle Stabilizer - referred to in the field as a rescue strut. It incorporates a simple twist lock technology instead of screwing a locking ring all the way down the shaft. Also, the strap that secures the stabilizer to the vehicle is now integrated in the system already, so no secondary equipment is required to use it.

Firefighters Receive "High Tech" Medical Training through Cooper Hospital

Firefighters from the Cherry Hill Fire Department were given a unique opportunity to hone their skills on a very "high-tech" training manikin, thanks to the efforts of both the Training Division and Cooper Hospital. This training tool provides, state of the art, EMS specific scenarios which closely mimics many of the medical-related emergencies they are faced with. From respiratory emergencies and allergic reactions to vitals signs and maternitys, there is really nothing these manikins cannot do.

Cooper hospital has also agreed to continue this training, throughout the future, with the members of the CHFD and provide a schedule of different training topics driven to maintain the level of excellence we require for our community.


Instructors are able to closely monitor all aspects of the firefighter's treatment through a computer that provides real-time data and allows them to evolve the signs and symptoms presented by the manikin.

These manikins are also used by Anesthesiologists at Cooper to re certify and maintain their license.

Several hundred Cherry Hill community members gathered on the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks to dedicate the Township's new 9/11 Memorial.

The Memorial is located in front of Cherry Hill Fire Department Central Command, at 1100 Marlkress Road, and is open to the public

The centerpiece of the Memorial is a 3-foot long piece of steel from 1 World Trade Center (north tower), suspended between two black granite towers. These towers stand on a granite pentagon-shaped based. The monument is dedicated "In Honor of the Lives Lost on September 11, 2001".

The Memorial was constructed by Cherry Hill Firefighters and EMS members and supported by the generous donations of many businesses and individuals in the community.

Ten years have passed since September 11, 2001 - a day most will always remember. Whether in New York City, or thousands of miles away, we all remember where we were and what we were doing the instant the news reached us. For the men and women of the Cherry Hill Fire Department, we also remember what it did to galvanize our resolve and commitment to providing our region with an emergency response, ready 24 hours a day, to meet any challenge before us.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to recognize that 10 years have gone by since so many victims lost their lives in the terrorist attacks, and so many of our colleagues made the ultimate sacrifice when they rushed into both World Trade Center towers to do what any of us would do. In 2011, by the end of August, we have already lost 68 firefighters who have answered their last call and we recognize their service and sacrifice.

Equally, we recognize the continued commitment, dedication and ultimate devotion to public safety we witness every day by Firefighters, EMTs, Police and all emergency workers around the world, and especially here in America. Tragically, those 68 firefighters that have died in the line of duty this year, puts us once again on track to make the average of 100 firefighters lost in the line of duty each year. Their circumstances remind us to always be safe in what we do. In addition, we recognize the accomplishments of the thousands of military personnel who continue to fight for our freedom, the cost of which has come at a high price for them and their families.

We hope that you will take a minute to remember the efforts of those at Ground Zero 10 years ago, and know that the Cherry Hill Fire Department recognizes those efforts every day as we prepare and train, ensuring we are ready to respond to your emergency.

9.3.11 Holiday Weekend Starts off Busy for Cherry Hill Firefighters & EMTs.

At 0825 in the morning of September 3, 2001, Firefighters responded to a motor vehicle accident in the 700 block of Cooper Landing Road. A single car accident ended up with a utility pole broken in half and the wires dangling just feet above the vehicle. Injuries were minor, but this major cross township roadway was closed for most of the day.

Later in the afternoon, at almost 4:30, Firefighters and EMTs responded to a two car accident at the intersection of Evesham & Springdale Roads. One vehicle had flipped onto its’ side and the driver was trapped. This automatically sends the Rescue Unit to respond along with the on duty Battalion Chief. Crews worked to stabilize the vehicle so EMTs could get inside and prepare the victim. Then rescue personnel removed the roof in order to get the victim out. The victim was transported to the Trauma Center at Cooper Hospital.

Both these accidents are under investigation by Cherry Hill Police.

"A" Group Battles Post-Storm Fire

On Monday, August 29, while still running dozens of Hurricane Irene related calls, "A" Group was dispatched to a reported fire in the Columbia Lakes section of town. Just before 3pm, Engine 1322, Squrt 1351, Ladder 1324, Battalion 13, and EMS 1392 responded to the report of a possible house fire to the rear of a home on Columbia Blvd.

Engine 1322 arrived on scene at 411 Kennebec Road and found an enclosed tow trailer parked in the driveway, well involved in fire. The flames from the completely filled trailer were spreading to the home's garage and roof. The crew from Engine 22 deployed one 1 3/4" handline and quickly knocked down the fire.

The trailer was destroyed by the fire and there was some minor damage to the exterior of the home. The fire is under investigation by the Cherry Hill Police Department and Camden County Fire Marshal's office.

Squrt 1331 was notified via a drive up report by a NJ DOT driver of a car fire in front of the WaWa on Route 70 and Marlkress Rd. Squrt 1331 arrived to find an engine compartment fire and went into service with the car fire line. The DOT truck that reported the fire, provided traffic control on the busy highway.

8.23.11 Earthquake Hits East Coast; CHFD Responds

At just before 2 PM on August 23, 2011, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter in Virginia was felt for hundreds of miles up and down the mid-Atlantic region, including Cherry Hill. For most, the earthquake consisted of some uncomfortable moments of light shaking. For those in bigger structures and high rise buildings, it was a little more unnerving. Across town, there were many buildings that were completely evacuated.

On duty Cherry Hill Firefighters & EMTs also experienced the same shaking in their firehouses. Once the effects had subsided, it was apparent that calls for help were going to start coming in. Within minutes of the earthquake, several off duty personnel who were working on the September 11 Memorial at Marlkress Road, manned the Cherry Hill Emergency Operations Center there. This center offers a central location, during emergencies or events, for all essential agencies to operate with a cohesive purpose and to better coordinate the efforts of emergency crews. Also working from the EOC were Cherry Hill Police officials and members of town government.

There were several calls from facilities who wanted some piece of mind that it was clear to allow evacuated employees and patients to return. Also, there were incidents involving some light structural damage and some tree limbs down. One 14-story high rise apartment building was evacuated and checked extensively for reported structural damage, and ultimately cleared. And, as is always the case, there were several calls for emergency medical assistance. The EOC worked to help clear incidents and also initiated a damage assessment of all school and health related facilities across town. Each school and health facility was visited or contacted by Cherry Hill Firefighters. In all, no incident of any great degree related to the earthquake were encountered. This incident ultimately served as a great tool highlighting the preparedness and training of Cherry Hill’s emergency workers.

Today’s earthquake is a great reminder that emergencies can strike anywhere and often happen without warning. Be sure your family has an emergency plan and a kit of emergency supplies to sustain yourselves for at least 72 hours.

Most emergencies and disasters come without warning. In contrast, the news agencies are already warning that our area may be affected by Hurricane Irene, currently making a fast track in the Caribbean ocean. Take some time to make sure you know what to do.

C Platoon High Rise Training

Before you can fight a high rise fire, you have to make it there first. That is the adage that Battalion Chief Stallfort is instilling in his firefighters on C Platoon. Over the past month the Engine and Ladder Companies have been arriving at 1900 Frontage Road, The Grand Apartments, for what is a simulated high rise fire on the 18th floor. The catch... the elevators are not usable and the firefighters must carry all of their equipment up the stairs with them. After adding up the added weight of a firefighter's protective gear, SCBA, hand tools and hose, the average firefighter was carrying at least an additional 100 lbs.

This has become a weekly exercise and times have continued to improve across the board as firefighters train on hoofing it to the top floors. Many companies practice daily in the surrounding buildings of their local.

Getting there is only half the battle. In a real high rise fire, firefighters will be required to deploy their equipment and hose to actively fight the fire. That however may be saved for the next training evolution. The important lesson here is how physical fitness correlates with our job performance.

9/11 Memorial Taking Shape

To mark the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attack, Cherry Hill Township and the Cherry Hill Fire Department are erecting a special memorial.

The memorial, to be located in front of the CHFD's Central Command building at 1100 Marlkress Road, was designed by CHFD Firefighter Ed Morris.

The monument will include a section of steel from the World Trade Center. This section of I-Beam from the WTC’s North Tower will serve as a bridge between two granite towers. This steel will forever symbolize the strength of the United States of America, and will serve as a fitting centerpiece of this memorial to honor those whose lives were lost that September day.

7.31.11 - Two Cherry Hill Firefighters Injured Fighting Stubborn Condo Fire

At just before noon on Sunday, July 31, 2011, Cherry Hill Firefighters and EMTS were dispatched to a reported condominium fire on Meerbrook Court in the Woods II development off Evesham Road.

Dispatchers advised incoming units they were receiving several calls reporting a working fire. As first arriving firefighters arrived (within 5 minutes of their dispatch), they reported a fast moving fire in the rear of the end units, on the first floor. The fire was spreading rapidly to the second floor and adjacent units. Crews met with residents evacuating the eight-unit building and all occupants were accounted for and outside the fire building.

Fire crews initiated an aggressive interior attack with hand lines on the first floor, extinguished the fire on the first floor and proceeded to the second floor. Firefighters continued that effort until it was clear to the incident commander that the fire had advanced across the second floor units and attic space, well in front of the interior crews, reaching the other end of the eight unit building.

For their safety, all firefighters were evacuated from the building and the strategy switched to a defensive attack in an effort to stop the spread of fire. All Cherry Hill fire units were assigned and brought to the scene. Several large master streams and aerial ladder streams were placed in service. Due to the large amount of fire and the high heat index, a second alarm was transmitted to bring in additional firefighters.

The defensive strategy worked and the bulk of the fire was knocked down quickly. After that, firefighters returned to the interior attack and cleared out any remaining hot spots and checked for fire extension. Ultimately, this fire was placed under control in just over 30 minutes from the arrival of firefighters.

During the firefight, two Cherry Hill firefighters were injured. One firefighter suffered from heat related symptoms and was transported to the emergency department at Virtua, Voorhees. He has been treated and released. The second firefighter suffered severe smoke inhalation and was originally transported to the emergency department at Cooper Hospital where he was stabilized. Since, he has been transported to the burn unit at Temple Hospital as a precaution, and is currently reported to be in stable condition.

This incident is currently under investigation by the Cherry Hill and Camden County Fire Marshal’s offices.

"Water Battery" Training

On Sunday, July 24, A-Group members from Engine 22, Squrt 51, Ladder 24, and Battalion 13 conducted training simulating a response to a fire in a large industrial building.

Upon Ladder 24 and Squrt 51's arrival on the scene of the "fire building" (actually, a vacant construction site), they began an initial interior fire attack.

Engine 22 and Battalion 13 arrived moments later. Squrt 51's officer reported rapidly declining conditions and Battalion 13 ordered interior units to pull out of the building.

The initial aggressive interior attack was changed to a defensive operation, with multiple aerial and master streams in operation as a water battery.

At 5:25 Sunday morning, June 19, 2011, fire erupted in Camden City at 1698 Federal St., the old Concord Chemical Company Building. Camden City Engine 9 arrived and reported a large vacant commercial building with heavy smoke throughout. A 2nd and 3rd Alarm were immediately requested. Camden City Battalion 1 arrived shortly there after and requested the 4th Alarm to be struck along with a Hazmat Response. Squrt 51 and Squad 13 along with Hazmat 13 responded into Camden upon the 4th Alarm being struck.

Squad 13 / Hazmat 13 began air monitoring and water run off sampling to ensure no chemicals or additional toxins were present in the building. This was confirmed that no additional hazardous materials were present and the Squad Company was released at 0800 hours. Squrt 51 remained on location, to continue master stream operations on the Division A Side of the building. The Squrt was relocated several times due to the building collapsing and concerns for additional collapses of the walls and roof. Shift change was made on scene with the members of B Platoon relieving A Platoon from the fire ground. Squrt 51 continued to operate until 1430 hours. The squrt was utilized extensively on the Division A side because of its ability to articulate and apply water up under the piles of debris via lower windows and openings.

Cherry Hill Sends Aid for the 2nd Time to Camden in Less Than 48 hrs

After the members of A Platoon spent all afternoon on June 9, 2011 fighting a 12 Alarm blaze in Camden, Squrt 51's crew and Engine 22's crew made shift change at 0800 hours Friday morning only to find themselves returning to Camden City at 0230 hours, Saturday morning. This time at 400 Wilson St. for a 400' x 400', 3-story, J-Shaped building on fire. Camden City Battalion 1 reported early on that there was heavy fire showing and companies were experiencing water and man power issues. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Alarms were struck immediately. Squrt 51 and Engine 22 responded in on the 4th Alarm. Squrt 51 first backed down to the Division A / B Corner only to be redirected to the rear of the Building (Division C) due to water supply issues. Upon reaching Division C, Engine 22 and Squrt 51 were asked to establish a water supply for Collingswood's Ladder 16 and Pennsauken's Ladder 1124. With the help of Haddonfield's Engine 14, Engine 22 and Squrt 51 laid water supply lines from the aerial devices to the river front, where Philly Fire Boat 1 was located. This provided the companies with a substantial supply of water right from the Delaware.

With the water being sent from Philly Fire Boat 1, Squrt 51 was able to provide water to both Ladder 1124, via a 4" and 5" supply line, and Collingswood's Ladder 16, via a 4" supply to Haddonfield's Engine 14 and then to Collingswood's Ladder. Engine 22 and Squrt 51 operated until relief arrived at 0900 hours from the on coming shift, A Platoon. Shift change was made on scene at the fire with Engine 22 and Squrt 51 continuing to operate until 1100 hours.

CHFD Responds to 12-Alarm Camden City Blaze

On Thursday, June 9 2011, Cherry Hill firefighters responded to a multiple-alarm fire in the City of Camden.

"A" Platoon members from Engine 1322, Squirt 1351, and Ladder 1324 responded on the 4th alarm to the city's Gateway section at approximately 1530 hrs. Volunteers from Rehab 13 also responded for much needed support on the nearly 100 degree day.

The fire, initially starting in the vacant former Reliable Tire warehouse at Orchard and Chestnut streets, quickly spread to several nearby businesses and homes.

Eventually growing to 12-alarms, nearly 60 fire departments from throughout Camden County, as well as neighboring Burlington and Gloucester Counties, sent units to the blaze.

CHFD Paramedic Cycling from Boston to DC

CHFD Paramedic Dave Milsted and his son Adam are riding from Boston to Washington, DC with several dozen other EMS providers as part of the 2011 EMS Memorial Bike Ride.

The ride is designed to remember EMS workers who have been injured or killed in the line of duty, raise public awareness of the profession, and promote a healthy lifestyle for EMS providers.

Hook and Ladder 44 welcomes new member

On Saturday May 1st 2011, a few hundred people gathered at Cherry Hill School East to pay tribute to a home town hero. It was the 2nd annual Jeremy Kane benefit run in honor of Lance Corporal Jeremy Kane who was killed in action in Afghanistan on January 23, 2010. The weather was perfect and all of the supporters lined up for a run/walk from Cherry Hill East High School on Kresson Road to M'Kor Shalom on Evesham Road. After the race concluded, the Kane Family and members of Jeremy's platoon, 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, were gathered at Ladder Company 44's apparatus to unveil its newest member. Chief Giorgio spoke to the Kane family about the importance of our Maltese Cross and our CHFD Patch and that we will proudly display the Unit Shield of 4th LAR. The members of our nations military will always be honored by the CHFD.

Annual Cherry Tree Planting Along Chapel Avenue

On Saturday, April 9, "A" Platoon members from Ladder 24, Engine 22, Squirt 51, and Battalion 13 planted over a dozen cherry trees along Chapel Avenue.

The Cherry Hill Firefighters were joined by members of Rehab 13 and American Legion Post 372 who helped place dozens of American flags along the roadway between Haddonfield Road and Kings Highway.

Resident Joe Zanghi started the tradition of planting the trees along Chapel Avenue and other Township buildings back in 1973.

The blooming of the trees is marked with a yearly "9/11 Rememberance and Patriotic Gratitude" observance at the Joyce Kilmer School.

The Kwanzan cherry trees will bring the total number of trees planted around the Township to over 1,400.

Fight for Air Climb 2011

On Saturday, March 19, 2011 Cherry Hill Firefighters, Cherry Hill EMS Personnel and a twelve year old son of a firefighter set out to climb and conquer the American Lung Associations Fight For Air Climb. The stair climb takes place at Three Logan Square in Center City, Philadelphia and consists of competitors climbing 50 floors and 1088 steps. This is the third year that Cherry Hill Fire Department has competed in the annual stair climb. The climb raises money and awareness for the fight against lung disease. This year the Cherry Hill Fire Department team consisted of 15 firefighters, 2 EMTs and 1 firefighter's son. The team set a fundraising goal of $2500 this year but managed to raise $3,047 with the largest fund raising efforts coming from one of its smallest teammates. Twelve year old Sean Ball, son of FF Brian Ball, raised $525 alone and completed the climb in an impressive 10 minutes 24 seconds.

Eight of the firefighters first competed in an all out team race with other firefighters, police officers, and emergency medical technicians during the First Responders' Challenge. This climb was completed in t-shirts, shorts and sneakers. A 4th place and 6th place finish were the outcomes of the 2 - four man Cherry Hill teams. After a short break these eight competitors returned to the 1st floor, joined the rest of the team and geared up in full firefighting PPE (coat, bunker pants, boots, helmets and SCBA pack) to climb the tower a second time. Firefighter Phil Cook (Engine 22) and Captain Timothy McGeady (Ladder 44) both added an extra edge of difficulty by carrying a 2 1/2" Hose pack up the 50 flights of stairs. The last hose pack was shared amongst a group of firefighters who passed it off every 5 floors. All in all it was a successful day for the American Lung Association and a proud showing by all the members and family of the Cherry Hill Fire Department who participated or supported the team.

Fire Damages Northwood Avenue Home

Companies quickly extinguished a house fire on Northwood Avenue on Tuesday afternoon. Companies arrived to find smoke and fire showing from the basement area of the dwelling. Squrt Co. 51 secured their own water supply and operated the first handline in the basement of the dwelling. Ladder Co. 24 searched and ventilated the dwelling. Engine Co. 22 operated the second handline on the first floor of the dwelling. EMS 13 and one BLS unit stood by for medical support. The fire was commanded by Battalion Chief Harris. There were no injuries reported. The fire was under control in about twenty minutes. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

At 1648 hrs. on March 24th, Ladder 24, Rescue 13 & Battalion 13 were dispatched to the intersection of Brace Road and Connector Road for a Motor Vehicle Accident Rescue Assignment. Ladder 24 arrived and confirmed Fire Radios reports of one driver trapped. Ladder 24's crew stabilized the vehicle with speed chocks, secured power and staged hydraulic tools. Rescue 13 arrived and worked with Ladder 24's crew to free the trapped driver that was extricated in under 10 minutes. BLS 96 transported the patient with ALS in tow.

On 3/20/11 at

13:12 hrs Hazmat 13 was special called to assist Bellmawr FD at a Tractor Trailer accident on Route 295 Northbound at Exit 28. The accident involved a tractor trailer carrying a non-hazardous load that struck the bridge supports and jack knifed. The passenger side saddle tan was leaking due to the axle being pushed into the tank. Crews stopped

the leak using their vacuum leak kit, while they set up for a product transfer. Approximately 120 gallons of product was off loaded. The Hazmat Unit went available within an hour.

At approx. 1534 hours on March 15, 2011, Cherry Hill Engine 1322's A-Platoon was dispatched to a report of a vehicle fire in the area of the McDonald's on Route 70. Engine 22 arrived on scene in the McDonald's parking lot and found a well-involved fire in the passenger compartment of a late model Audi. The fire was also extending into two wooden clothing donation bins adjacent to the vehicle. The crew of Engine 1322, under the command of Lt. Cranmer, quickly knocked down the fire. The fire extensively damaged the passenger compartment of the vehicle and slightly damaged the exterior of the clothing bins. There were no injuries reported during the incident.

At 1254 hours, Squad 13 and BLS 1396 were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident in the area of 330 Browning Lane. Once on location, it was determined that they had a two vehicle accident with one driver entrapped. Rescue 13 and Battalion 13 were added to the assignment. Squad 13 and BLS 1396 began a simultaneous effort to provide patient care while engaging extrication operations. Patient was freed from the vehicle prior to the arrival of the Rescue.

As the Squad Company was wrapping up, County Communications advised of another Motor Vehicle Accident at the intersection of Route 561 and Walt Whitman with a report of people trapped which automatically added Rescue 13 and Battalion 13. Squad 13 quickly redirected their efforts to the response and arrived to find an additional two vehicle crash with one driver still trapped. Captain Haldeman advised county of the conditions and added additional medical resources due to the fact that they had two Priority 2 patients.(2 BLS and 2 ALS units total) Squad 13's crew split up and began patient care and extrication operations. Rescue 13 arrived and aided in the operations, completing the total extrication in about 15 minutes.

Cherry Hill Firefighters Battle House Fire

At approximately 1425 hours on Monday afternoon Cherry Hill Firefighters were alerted to a report of a house fire in the 400 block of Downs Drive. Squad 13, Squrt 1331, Ladder 1344, and Battalion 13, along with a BLS unit responded on the initial alarm. Battalion 13 upgraded the assignment to a working fire dispatch adding Ladder 1324, with a visible column of smoke from Station 3.

Three companies were on the scene with in five minutes of dispatch and found a single family dwelling with fire on the first and second floor. The fire was extending rapidly into the attic and threatening the neighbor’s home. Squad 13's crew deployed a 2 1/2" hand line and initiated an attack on the main body of fire in the two car garage. Battalion 13 assumed command and Squrt 1331's crew deployed a 1 3/4" hose line to the second floor and the two engine companies moved inside to extinguish the fire.

Ladder 1344 and 1324 conducted a primary search with negative results and initiate ventilation of the dwelling. Members opened up walls and ceilings to assist the engine companies with extinguishing the fire in the attic space. Engine 1322 was special called into the scene as a rapid intervention crew.

Mutual aid from Lawnside, Haddonfield, and Maple Shade provided coverage for Cherry Hill Fire stations. The fire was place under control with in 25 minutes. No injuries were reported. A total of 3 engine companies, 2 ladder companies, and 3 chief officers responded to the scene.

Members Train for Ice Rescue Emergencies

Members of Rescue 13 and Ladder 24 spent their Sunday morning reviewing and training on ice rescue operations. The crews practiced rescuing simulated victims from the water. Ice rescue operations require quick action from our personnel to have a successful outcome. Victims exposed to water hovering around the freezing mark will begin to suffer from hypothermia in minutes. Human body heat is lost 25 times faster in water than when exposed to air and death can occur in as little as 15 minutes.

Our members must first be prepared to take care of themselves. Members dressed in exposure suites can operate on the ice and in the water with limited exposure to the cold. Here the rescuers review basic self rescue techniques for getting themselves back up on the surface of the ice after entering the water.

The crews then spent time reviewing the use of the ice rescue sling to remove a victim from the water. It is important that the members are proficient with the equipment and how to deploy it rapidly. A victim in the water may only have a few minutes left after our arrival before they succumb to hypothermia.

The goal of the is that once the rescuer reaches the victim they will gain positive control of the victim and not lose contact with them. Once in the sling the victim is attached to the retrieval line and pulled back to shore with the rescuer.

The companies finished up the training by reviewing shore based rescue using a hose inflation kit and two lengths of 2 1/2" hose. It is important for the first due companies to have a knowledge of what actions they can take to help stabilize the patient and keep them buoyant until the arrival of the rescue company.

Even if the victim can't be removed using the inflated hose the added buoyancy can help keep them above the water until a rescuer can reach them. The hose also provides a large object that is easier for the victim to hold onto as they lose dexterity in their hand from the exposure to the cold water.

Search tactics. Each scenario was based on finding an engine

company firefighter who was separated from the hose line and became lost in a large warehouse type setting. A rapid intervention team was used to locate the victim using Large Area Search rope and procedures. When each victim was found, life sustaining measures were put in place such as assessing the victim, providing air, packaging and removal. The drill was done in zero visibility.

Discussion following the training included tactical considerations about tools and equipment and search rope placement. Although not used often, it is critical to perform Large Area Search effectively. This type of training keeps members skills sharp for when it is truly needed.

MVA/Rescue Assignment IFO 1638 Springdale Rd

On the evening of January 16th around 2000hrs, Ladder 1344, BLS 1396 & BLS 1393 responded to an MVA across from Springdale Farms. Upon arrival, Ladder 4A's officer Lt. Jim Collins, assessed the 2 car MVA and determined that 1 occupant from vehicle 1 was trapped while occupants in vehicle 2 were out of their pick up truck and complaining of neck and back pain. The assignment was then upgraded to a Rescue Box. Rescue 13, Battalion 13, EMS 13 and 1392 responded. Ladder 4's crew stabilized vehicle 1 and started removing the front and rear driver's side doors. Upon Rescue 13's arrival, it was determined that the occupants foot was pinned under the dashboard. Hydraulic tools from 1344 and Rescue 13 were then used to lift the dashboard. The occupant was then extricated and transported to Virtua Voorhees.

B Group Petrogen Training

On January 26, 2011 the members of Squad 13 and Squrt 1331/Rescue 13 received training in the use of the Petrogen Torch Cutting System. Under the direction of FF. Mac Dermott, Lt. DiRenzo and Battalion Chief Stallfort, CHFD members received a period of classroom instruction followed by a series of practical evolutions. The Petrogen Torch Cutting System utilizes gasoline and oxygen to create a cutting torch that can cut through steel by oxidizing the steel 100% therefore, making rescue safer for victims and rescuers. The system is ideal for structural collapse and confined space rescue. Members must be trained in the proper use of the Petrogen Torch including proper set-up, lighting procedures, cutting procedures, extinguishment, take-down and clean-up after use. Member and victim safety are also stressed as well as trouble shooting procedures. The Petrogen Torch Cutting System is the primary cutting system used by CHFD members from the cache of cutting systems available to members including the oxy-acetylene Torch, map gas torch and slice pack.

Hazmat 13 Operates At Gloucester City Building Collapse

On Saturday January 15th, Gloucester City FD Battalion 504 (Williams) arrived at the Holt's Marine Terminal to find a substantial collapse of a warehouse roof structure. After an investigation by Gloucester City Squad 51, it was discovered that an R-22 distribution line within the collapsed area ruptured, causing a large, concentrated vapor cloud to form within the building. Based upon these findings, Hazmat 13 was requested to the scene along with Camden City Rescue 1. Members of Hazmat 13 conducted air monitoring while research on the product was conducted. Once the product was identified and confirmed, private contractors isolated the source from a remote storage vessel. The building was ventilated and air monitoring was continued until meter readings were within permissible range. Hazmat 13 operated for approximately 3 hours on the incident.

Trapped Motorist Rescued from Vehicle during Snow Fall

During the light but steady snowfall this Saturday, January 8th, at around 12:45 pm a motorist struck a telephone pole and guardrail at Church Road and Woods Road near the Yale School Academy. Squrt 1351, Rescue 13, Battalion 13 and BLS 1392 were dispatched for a reported accident involving one car into a pole with the driver trapped inside. Squrt 1351 arrived and confirmed this report stating they had one car into a pole with the driver's legs pinned under the dash, but uninjured otherwise. Squrt 1351's crew began stabilizing the vehicle and securing power while a precautionary hose line was stretched. At the 10 minute mark Rescue 13 and Battalion 13 arrived. Patient access was given so BLS 1392's personnel could evaluate the victim while the Rescue and Squrt's crew began removing the doors and making the necessary cuts to perform a modified dash roll. Once a few inches were gained between the dash and the victim's legs, she was able to slide herself out of the vehicle unharmed. The patient was transported to the hospital via BLS 1392 to be checked out further. The extrication was complete within 25 minutes of dispatch.

CHFD Alarm System becomes Building Fire and HazMat

1/1/11 at 09:30 am CHFD Squrt 31 and Ladder 44 responded to 1960 Old Cuthbert for a fire alarm, Squrt 31 discovered smoke showing and requested that a Building Fire assignment bringing Squad 13, Battalion 13, BLS 1393 and the Working Fire Box Ladder 24 and Engine 22.

The fire occurred in a battery manufacturing facility and resulted in a leak of Potassium Hydroxide. CHFD HazMat team members and Camden County Department of Health neutralized the material.

New Years Day Fire

Companies were dispatched to 700 Marlow Road @ 06:04 hours for a report of a dwelling fire. First due company, Ladder Co.1344, arrived and reported a single family dwelling with smoke showing from the 2nd floor of the dwelling. While enroute, Battalion Chief Harris requested the working fire box.

Ladder Co. 1344 and Squrt Co. 1331's crews located the fire in an attic space above the garage. The fire had also extended into the living space of the dwelling. Companies quickly extinguished the fire. Squad Co. 13 supported the first engine company with a second line. Ladder Co. 1324's crew assisted with interior and exterior tasks to vent and contain the fire.

The fire was under control quickly with no firefighter injuries.

At 2018hrs. on Christmas Eve, Cherry Hill Fire Department A Platoon companies were alerted to a dwelling fire at 627 Kenilworth Avenue. Squrt 51 arrived and observed smoke showing from the front door of a 2 story wood frame single family dwelling. Squrt 51's crew stretched 1 13/4" hose line after laying in from the hydrant. Ladder 24 conducted a search and ventilated the dwelling while Squrt 51 extinguished the basement fire. Engine 22 stretched a back up line and assisted with overhaul. Battalion 13 (Harris) commanded the incident.

Companies on A Platoon received instruction on how to maximize the equipment they carry in their pockets along with there Gemtor personal harness. The motivation behind this type of training is to be able to immediately assist a downed firefighter until additional help arrives.

Battalion Chief Rick Harris and Lieutenant Jason Houck instructed on-duty companies throughout the day.

The training consisted of 2 segments -
1. Modifying a downed firgfighters SCBA and Gemtor harness for horizontal movement (i.e. across floors)
2. Modifying a downed firefighters SCBA and Gemtor harness for vertical movement (i.e. stairs )

B/C Harris and Lt. Houck demonstrated how to use SCBA, Gemtor harness, personal rope, webbing, & other small items that many firefighters carry with them. All firefighters demonstrated the techniques they were taught while in the daylight.

Alarm Investigation Becomes Hazardous Materials Incident

In the early morning hours of November 30th, Squrt 31 and Ladder 44 were dispatched for an activated fire alarm at 1951 Old Cuthbert Road, a laboratory complex that plates computer chips with precious metals utilizing various chemicals. Squrt Company 1331 B arrived under the command of Lt. Art West with an audible and visual fire alarm activation. The building was secured with no access, so an emergency contact was summoned to respond. A 360 degree observation of the building revealed nothing showing.

On arrival of the emergency contact, Squrt Co. 31 accessed the building to investigate the activation. During the investigation, access was made to the laboratory area where, upon opening the lab door, companies were met with a fumes cloud that caused immediate eye irritation and coughing, resulting in the immediate retreat of the firefighters to the exterior. Lt. West summoned additional companies to the scene including Battalion Chief M. Iannetta, Ladder Co. 44 and Haz-Mat 13 under the command of Lt. W. Arcari.

Utilities were terminated to the building. Fire Department personel utilized the MSDS Manuals and conducted phone interviews with the occupants chemical technicians to identify the potential chemicals involved and their possible hazards. Squrt 31 established a water supply and lines were connected to the fire department connection. Haz-Mat personel made entry into the building finding a hot plate had been left on with a beaker on top containing T-400 Filmstripper. Haz-Mat removed the beaker and it's contents into a secondary container and removed it from the building. Building management took reponsibility for disposal of the product.

No Fire Department personnel were injured during the incident, however this is a stark reminder that what may seem like an "average" call can quickly become a hazardous event for firefighters. It is important for firefighters to never become complacent during the "bread and butter" calls and to remain calm and summon the necessary back-up resources when faced with any "surprises" that may arise during investigations.

The 7^th Annual Feed the Troops Thanksgiving event took place on Thursday at the Americas Best Value Inn on Route 70. The Jewish War Veterans, Veteran Motorcycle groups, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops and numerous other groups welcomed 3 bus loads of troops to Cherry Hill. A few hundred people lined the parking lot Thursday morning; waving flags, shouting cheers and snapping pictures of Americas Heroes. The troops, taking a break from their training, were given a first class meal and some entertainment to give them a little surprise taste of home before they head overseas to defend our country. Ladder 24’s crew used the parapet of the roof to simulate a window sill. The rescues of both conscious and unconscious persons were simulated. This function, in some cases, would be handled by one Firefighter. This Firefighter rides the Outside Vent position on the Ladder Company and is responsible to vent, enter and search.

11.22.10 - Turkey Bowl Heats Up East/West Rivalry

East and West after the game.

The early morning fog lifted just in time for the first C Platoon Turkey Bowl to get underway. The East and West Battalion companies met Monday morning at the Cherry Hill Township turf field off Chapel Ave. just after working their shift for a gentle, peaceful game of flag football. The East Battalion, dressed in red and led by team captain Sal Paolini, also had a surprise walk on, Battalion Chief William Stallfort. The West Battalion, in their home field black uniforms, took the turf behind their team captain, FF Joe Gerace – who played every down of the entire game, and with a broken finger.

The peaceful and passive game was marked by several notable plays. Most notable is the organization of the event and game play of both team captains. Each contributed exceptional play to their respective teams; Gerace having 3 touchdowns (including 1 interception that led to a touchdown), and Paolini playing in nearly every position and involved in every score by the East side, and also included an interception.

Other notable plays: East Battalion: Stackhouse – interception, touchdown passes, several “gentle” tackles; Cabaza – two touchdown receptions; Sarli-Prelle – multiple quarterback hurries; Kinky – two touchdown passes. West Battalion: Williams - #1 receiver, one touchdown; Wood – several receptions and tackles, Oberle – several “tackles”.

The game was characterized by the West dominating the first half, and then the East rallying a comeback to go ahead by one score in the second half. Late in the second half, on 3rd and long, the West’s Lt. DiRenzo beat Captain Paolini for about a 35 yard reception to keep the West alive. It ultimately led to the West tying the game with only 50 seconds left. As stated: at the end of the game no team emerged as the winners, but all survived.

Rescue 13 Special Called to Somerdale

In the early morning hours of November 23, Rescue 13 B Group members were special called to Somerdale for a motor vehicle accident, vehicle into a house. Somerdale Fire Department was reporting a mid-sized SUV that crashed into a house, possibly compromising the structural integrity of the house. No occupants were trapped as the house was vacant and the driver of the SUV was extricated by the police on scene and transported to the hospital by EMS.

Rescue Company 13 and Collapse Unit 13 responded under the command of Lieutenant Art West. On arrival, companies surveyed the scene assessing the damage to the house. It was determined that no structural shoring was needed by the rescue company as there was no evidence of structural compromise as well as the fact that there was no life safety danger on the scene. Rescue Company structural shoring is reserved to reduce the danger to company members in the event that a victim requires rescue.

Rescue 13 members remained on scene until the vehicle was pulled from the house by a local towing company.

C Platoon RIT Study & Training

During the month of October, Battalion Chief William Stallfort conducted Rapid Intervention Training (RIT) with his 6 Companies assigned to his platoon. This training served both as a practical training exercise for the Companies and a way for the B/C to record, revise and implement a RIT operational guideline. Each of the 6 Companies arrived individually to the Burn Building at 1100 Marlkress Road and were given the scenario that they were the RIT Company arriving at a single family dwelling fire. Each Company took preemptive measures to begin making the fire ground safe and prepare for any firefighter emergencies. Shortly into the operation the scenario quickly changed with a firefighter on the Engine Company's attack line becoming trapped and injured after a small collapse inside the building. The assigned RIT Company quickly mobilized and began rescue efforts; Each crew had to assess, package and remove a down firefighter from the basement up a 20' sloped surface.

The Battalion logged what equipment each Company brought, what they did preemptively (i.e. throw ladders, 360 degree size-up), how and what they did to rescue and remove the firefighter and ultimately how long the operation took. This information will be analysed and used to better equip and teach our Companies in firefighter rescue and RIT operations

Firefighter Anthony Sambucini Retires

On Friday, November 12, 2010 Firefighter Anthony Sambucini worked his last tour of duty with his company Ladder 24 C. Tony enjoyed a luncheon and dinner that he hosted along with his family at Ladder 24's house on Friday. There friends, family and fellow firefighters from around the county stopped in to say their goodbye to Tony.

In addition to completing 25 years of service as a career firefighter, Tony served 9 years as a volunteer firefighter in the previous Fire District 5/Church Road Fire Company. Firefighter Sambucini completed basic firefighter training at the Camden County Vocational and Technical School then attended advanced firefighter training through the Delaware State Fire School. Firefighter Sambucini began a steady progression of fire service training including fire service instructor, Fire Official, and Emergency Medical Technician. Tony was part of a team of firefighters trained in 1981 as field SCBA repair technicians, the precursor to our successful SCBA Repair Shop.

Firefighter Sambucini served in a number of capacities during his career with an emphasis on helping to train other firefighters—not just in Cherry Hill, but in our region. Firefighter Sambucini served as a Company Officer during the transition to the new Fire District and worked in the Training and Safety Division helping to develop the first district-wide training program. In addition, Firefighter Sambucini served in many of our Fire Stations and an extended commitment at Ladder Company #2. Tony developed a number of training programs on his own—always with an eye on firefighter safety and improving our capability. Hallmarks of Firefighter Sambucini’s service include the effort he placed on servicing the public, his loyalty to the CHFD and his pride for the firefighting profession. On behalf of the entire Department and Board of Fire Commissioners, we congratulate Firefighter Sambucini on his admirable service to the residents of Cherry Hill and the Cherry Hill Fire Department. We wish Tony and Kathleen continued success in all their endeavors.

On Wednesday,October 27, 2010 at the North Kings Highway Station Engine1322, Ladder1324 and Squirt 1351 conducted an exercise simulating a response to an unconscious patient who was on the roof of a house. Cherry Hill Firefighters have faced situations similar to this in the field several times before. For the training the engine and ladder companies utilized their ropes, ground ladders, and mechanical advantage devices to safely lower the simulated patient, safely secured in a stokes basket, from the height of over 13 feet.

On October 20, 2010 Engine Company 22, Ladder Company 24 and Squrt Company 51 conducted live fire training at the CHFD Training Academy on Marlkress Road. The companies, under the supervision of A Platoon Commander, Battalion Chief Rick Harris, simulated an apartment fire at the burn building. The Engine Companies secured a water supply from the fire hydrant, advanced hoselines in to locate and extinguish the fire. The Ladder Company simultaneously forced entry in to the building and searched for any missing occupants Ladder Company 24 ventilated the building, freeing the smoke and heat to create a better environment for any trapped occupants and the Engine Companies working to extinguish the fire. 11.8.10 - Car Overturns on Route 295 On-Ramp, Traps Driver

At just about 4 pm on November 8th, Cherry Hill Firefighters and EMTs were dispatched to a reported motor vehicle accident with entrapment in the area of Route 70 and 295. First arriving units encountered a single vehicle overturned on the northbound on-ramp from Route 70 to Route 295. Firefighters used advanced stabilization techniques that included a cribbing structure under the vehicle and ratchet straps securing it to their own Rescue vehicle. Once stabilized, EMTs continued to assess and treat the patient while firefighters worked to extricate the driver from the vehicle. It was determined that removing the roof was the best option and hydraulic rescue tools were used to cut the roof from the vehicle. Patient access was now complete and the victim was removed from the wreckage, placed on a backboard and into an awaiting CHFD ambulance. The NJ State Police are investigating this incident.

11.1.10 Three Car Accident, Kings & Church

Cherry Hill Firefighters and EMTs were dispatched to a car accident reporting multiple vehicles involved and at least one person trapped in their vehicle. One ambulance, one Engine, the Battalion Chief and the Rescue Company were dispatched. Personnel arrived and quickly assessed that no victims were trapped in their vehicles. All potential victims involved were evaluated for injuries and a second ambulance was dispatched. Firefighters assisted EMTs in patient care and loading them into awaiting CHFD ambulances for transport to local hospitals. Firefighters then handled any other accident related hazards. This accident is under investigation by Cherry Hill Police.

Rescue 13 Structural Collapse Training

Members of the Cherry Hill Fire Department Rescue Company 13 participated in training on structural collapse, building shoring. The shoring training took place over three days as A Group, B Group and C Group each spent a day training. The training included a morning lecture session where the members learned the necessary information to identify the signs of structural damage to buildings, the steps to prepare to support damaged structures, and how to build the shoring systems needed to support the damaged sections of buildings. The rescue company shores damaged buildings only to serve as protection when someone is trapped within the building. The second part of the training included an afternoon session of practical evolutions. Rescue members constructed three shoring systems including the solid sole raker shore system for supporting damaged walls, a double T-shore used for supporting a damaged floor, and a window shore. The days of training were the first eight hours of the sixteen hour structural collapse technician course being instructed by Rescue Company 13 B Group Firefighter Robert "Mac" MacDermott. Firefighter MacDermott also seves as a Unit Leader on the New Jersey State Police Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR), NJTF 1.

10.10.10 Cherry Hill Firefighters Take on Specialized Training

While it was no Chilean mine rescue, Cherry Hill firefighters recently underwent some highly technical training. The Cherry Hill Fire Department considers itself to be an “all-hazard agency”. This was no more evident than during the first weeks of October when firefighters simulated a building collapse with reported people trapped. The circumstances; workmen in a vacant commercial structure become trapped after utility equipment explodes causing a 2-ton piece of concrete to, not only trap them underneath, but the collapsed debris also prohibited rescuers from gaining easy access; were played out as a live scenario.

Instructors played the roles of the trapped victims and their co-workers. It was up to the incoming firefighting crews to: control the scene, gather information, deploy rescue personnel appropriately, and employ previous education and equipment training to gain access and free the trapped ‘workers’. Rescuers were confronted with several collapse like obstacles and challenges. The training building was completely transformed to mimic a building that had suffered a partial collapse. In the end, each set of rescuers successfully managed the debris and were able to free the victims and extricate them from the building using collapse rescue techniques. Several Cherry Hill firefighters are also members of the NJ Urban Search and Rescue team, and have brought some of that federal training to benefit Cherry Hill.

Family Escapes Early Morning House Fire

At approximately 6:08 a.m. on Friday, October 15, 2010, the Cherry Hill Fire Department received a 9-1-1 call reporting a fire at 52 E. Riding Drive. Battalion Chief 13 (William Stallfort) was first to arrive and discovered they had heavy fire at the front door of the dwelling, extending into the residence. Squrt 1331 arrived shortly behind the Battalion and deployed a 2½” hand line to the front door and started extinguishing the fire. Ladder 1344 arrived and assisted with the first hand line then went into dwelling to ventilate and check for any extension of fire to the second floor. Minor extension was found. Squad 13 stretched a second 2½” hand line to assist in controlling and extinguishing the fire. Crews remained on location to perform extensive overhaul and checking for extension.

The homeowners and their son awoke to the sound of their smoke detector and immediately exited the home using the back door. This fire provides a powerful reminder of the importance of working smoke detectors as the residents were faced with a wall of fire cutting off their escape through the front door.

4 Engine Co’s, 2 Ladder Co’s, 1 Rehab Unit, 1 EMS unit and 1 Battalion Chief—a total of 27 firefighters responded to this incident, gaining the upper hand in 30 minutes. The home suffered significant smoke and fire damage from the fire.

The Cherry Hill Fire Department Fire Marshal, Cherry Hill Police Detectives, Camden County Fire Marshal and Camden County Prosecutors Office are jointly investigating this fire.

Second Job for Ladder 24C

During the early morning hours of Friday, October 15, 2010 Ladder 24 was dispatched to a reported dwelling fire at 5 E. Collings Avenue in Collingswood, NJ. Collingswood's Squad 16 arrived on location and reported a 2 story single family dwelling with the front porch well involved in fire. The Squad Company established a water supply and stretched an 1 3/4" hose line. Ladder 24's crew assisted with some minor overhaul and checking for extension before being released. Fortunately, the fire was contained mostly to the porch with minor extension inside the dwelling. This was the second fire for Ladder 24, C Platoon.

Trash Man

On October 15th Engine 1322 and Ladder 1324 met on the parking lot of the Ellisburg shopping center for a CHFD public interface program. The assignment form listed “ Fire Department to Help Welcome Home a Viet Nam Veteran” as the request for service. How can this happen?

A few weeks earlier, the local trash man was on his usual route. He noticed 3 yellow ribbons in front of a house. He wondered if the homeowner had family in the military. One day he doubled back when he saw a woman taking in her trash cans in front of the house. He asked her about the ribbons. She explained that the ribbons were in honor of the service members currently serving. Her husband had a special reason for the ribbons. He was a retired police officer who served in Viet Nam. He was depressed because he felt that the returning service members were not being properly welcomed home from the war. This brought back long forgotten memories of his own unceremonious homecoming from 40 years ago. Little did she know at the time, she was telling her husbands story to Shawn “ Trashman” Ewing.

Shawn had recently joined a group known as Warriors Watch Riders: A group of Motorcycle riders whose vision is to honor all returning veterans with a proper homecoming. The vision statement of the Warriors Watch Riders is simple. The Warriors watch envisions a day when “ every member of the armed forces at home or abroad is and their families feel appreciated, honored, respected and loved by the citizens they risk their lived to protect”. The group tries to give every returning veteran a Rock Star reception.

Shawn immediately went into action, organizing a motorcycle ride and greeting known as a Mug and Hug. Shawn “Trashman” Ewing put together 50 bikes and riders, Police , Fire and other escort vehicles to honor a veteran he never met. We rallied at the parking lot and put together a game plan. The ride began and we traveled to the home of Sergeant Slater, USAF. Sgt. Slater did not immediately realize that the rally in front of his house was for him. When he did, it brought tears to his eyes and to the eyes of his family. Sgt. Slater said a few words concerning his service and was with an honorable proclamation and was coined by the Warriors Watch Riders. 50 or so riders along with CHFD and CHPD officers shook the hand and thanked our local hero for his service to our country. This may have been 40 years late for Sgt.Slater but nonetheless greatly appreciated.

I thanked Shawn for his invitation to the CHFD.

Afternoon Fire at Park Place Condos

At around noon on Thursday, October 14, 2010 companies were dispatched to a reported apartment fire at the Park Place Condos. In route PD was on location and reporting smoke showing. Upon arriving, Ladder 24 confirmed they had a working kitchen fire in a 2nd floor apartment. Engine 22 and Squrt 31 establish a water supply and stretched an 1 3/4" hose line. The fire was contained to the kitchen and quickly placed under control with no injuries to report.

B Group Afternoon East Side Box

The Cherry Hill Fire Department was dispatched to a report of "an explosion and a house on fire" in the area of 165 Orchard Lane. Three engine companies, two ladder companies and the Battalion 13 (Michael Iannetta) responded to the reported location. Cherry Hill PD was first to arrive and reported an occupied dwelling about 70% involved in fire. The address was amended to 201 Orchard Lane. There was a car parked at the residence and the occupants not accounted for. Squad 13 arrived, established a water supply and stretched a 2 1/2" hose line to the front of the dwelling attempting to push the fire back and make entry. Battalion 13 arrived and established command with Ladder 44 arriving shortly there after and beginning aggressive VES of a few windows before being pushed out due to the house becoming fully involved in fire. Additional 2 1/2" hose lines and a blitz fire were stretched via Squrt 31 and Engine 22. Ladder 24 arrived and assisted Ladder 44 in opening up the remaining windows and doors. Firefighters were challenged with long hose stretches, a well advanced fire condition upon arrival and several propane cylinders located in the rear of the dwelling that had to be removed throughout the operation. The fire was quickly placed under control within 22 minutes from dispatch. The occupants were later safely accounted for and no injuries or fatalities reported.

A Group: Valley Run Fire

On Tuesday September, 14, 2010 at around 10:00 am the Cherry Hill Fire Department received a 9-1-1 call reporting a house fire at 427 Valley Run Drive. Companies began receiving reports from the PD that the house was fully involved. Engine 52 arrived on location reporting a 1 1/2 story, single family dwelling with smoke showing from the front of the dwelling.

The house was a split level house, meaning that as you entered the house via the front door you were met by a landing with a short set of stairs going up to the 2nd floor living space and a short set of stairs going down to the 1st floor living space. In the rear the 1st floor exited at grade level.

Engine 52's crew stretched an hose line to the front of the property and found a well advanced fire inside on the bottom floor extending to the second floor via the front stairs. Ladder 44 arrived and began ventilation and a quick search to confirm all occupants were out and accounted for. Battalion 13 (Rick Harris) arrived and assumed command. Engine 52's crew pushed the first hose line through the front door and began knocking the second floor fire. Engine 22's crew stretched the second hose line to the rear and advanced in on the 1st floor fire knocking down all visible fire. The companies checked for extension and continued searching the dwelling for any additional occupants, however none were found. Companies remained on location overhauling the fire areas and ventilating the dwelling. There was one civilian burn victim that was transported to Cooper Trauma for evaluation. The fire is under investigation by the Cherry Hill Fire Marshal's Office

9.11.10 - September 11 In Memoriam

September 11, 2001 is a day most will always remember. Whether in New York City, or thousands of miles away, we all remember where we were and what we were doing the instant the news reached us. For the men and women of the Cherry Hill Fire Department, we also remember what it did to galvanize our resolve and commitment to providing our region with an emergency response, ready 24 hours a day, to meet any challenge before us.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to recognize that nine years has gone by since so many victims lost their lives in the terrorist attacks, and so many of our colleagues made the ultimate sacrifice when they rushed into both World Trade Center towers to do what any of us would do. In 2010, by the end of August, we have already lost 51 firefighters who have answered their last call and we recognize their service and sacrifice.

Equally, we recognize the continued commitment, dedication and ultimate devotion to public safety we witness every day by Firefighters, EMTs, Police and all emergency workers around the world, and especially here in America. Just this morning (September 10, 2010), three (3) firefighters were seriously injured in a collapse at an apartment fire in Coatsville, PA. Their circumstances remind us to always be safe in what we do. In addition, we recognize the accomplishments of the thousands of military personnel who continue to fight for our freedom, the cost of which has come at a high price for them and their families.

We hope that you will take a minute to remember the efforts of those at Ground Zero nine years ago, and know that the Cherry Hill Fire Department recognizes those efforts every day as we prepare and train, ensuring we are ready to respond to your emergency.

8.28.10 Firefighters Salute “Iron & Steel” Motorcade

As the 10^th anniversary of the September 11^th attacks on New York City and Washington D.C. approach, Cherry Hill Firefighters & EMTs took some time out to help recognize an effort to build memorials and bring attention to the firefighters who lost their lives that day. The New York based “Fire Family Transport Foundation” and the Iron & Steel motorcycle run team delivered several pieces of steel, originally from the World Trade Center, to Arlington County, VA. The motorcade, which had a flat bed trailer carrying the steel, consisted of FDNY antique fire trucks, official vehicles, and about 1,000 motorcycles.

At about 10:30 am, Firefighters & EMTs lined up on Route 295 overpasses at East Chapel Ave., and Kresson Road; as did firefighters up and down the route to salute the motorcade as it delivered the piece of steel in the day long trip. The group set out early in the morning from Brooklyn, NY and ultimately delivered the pieces of steel to the Arlington County Fire Department who plans to build a monument in the future incorporating the steel. Two other trips by the same group in recent years have delivered steel to Shanksville, PA and Fort Benning GA, both communities playing a role in the response to the terrorist attacks that day.

6.3.10 Water Rescue Effort in Cooper River

At 7:12 pm, Cherry Hill Firefighters were dispatched to a water rescue assignment at the Cooper River across from 202 Park Blvd. The caller reported seeing a male enter the river about 30 feet and swiftly disappear underwater. First arriving fire units conferred with Camden County Park Police, who showed them the exact location the male went into the river and where he was last seen. The on-duty battalion chief quickly ordered more units to search and utilized marine units from Cherry Hill, Collingswood, Pennsauken & Westmont while support crews walked the shoreline from all points.

Additionally, the Cherry Hill Fire Department Rescue team initiated a shore based rescue effort with rescue personnel in full water rescue equipment, walking in the murky water while on a tether line from shore. This effort began in the location where the victim was last seen above water. As additional personnel were added, the search grid was expanded and it was a shore-based, tethered crew that discovered the victim approximately 30 yards from his point of entry, about an hour after rescuers first arrived. The victim was recovered from the water using a water rescue "Stokes Basket". This incident is under investigation.

4.10.10 Cherry Hill Firefighters Continue with Annual Tradition of Planting Cherry Trees Along Chapel Avenue

The tree planting was completed by C group Engine 22 and 51 on April 10, 2010. Three trees were donated; one from each IAFF local and one was donated personally by Mr. Joe Zanghi, who has orchestrated the planting of the trees along Chapel Avenue since 1973. The America Legion Post 372 adorned the trees along Chapel Avenue with U.S. flags and yellow ribbons as they do every spring.

On Sunday, April 18th, the 9/11 remembrance ceremony and patriotic appreciation event occurred. The west side companies participated. The large flag hanging from 1324 was the backdrop for the event. Several dignitaries spoke at the event, including John Rocco (retired assemblyman) and Councilman John Amato. Even our own Battalion Chief Iannetta had some choice words of remembrance. The American Legion Post 372 was also in attendance, and some of the older veterans spoke on their behalf.

The "Honor and Remember" flag was displayed along with the American flag on the flagpole of the Kilmer School. This new honor and remember flag has been designed to never forget those who made the supreme sacrifice in all of the wars/conflicts that the U.S. has been apart of.

3.20.10 CHFD Participates in Philadelphia Stair Climb

On Saturday, March 20, 2010, for the second year in a row, the Cherry Hill Fire Department participated in the Philadelphia Stair Climb. This is a 50-story stair climb at the Bell Atlantic Building in Philadelphia benefiting the American Lung Association. There were 21 members on the Cherry Hill Fire Department team consisting of 15 firefighters, 2 EMS personnel, and 4 wives.

The Cherry Hill Fire Department took 2nd and 4th place in the KD Financial First Responders Challenge. This challenge is in plain clothes and is a competition among first responders. After the challenge, several members climbed again in full turnout gear, with some wearing a SCBA. Gwyn McGeady, wife of Captain Tim McGeady, took second place in her category. The members trained for several months to prepare themselves for this challenge, and their hard work and dedication showed.

The Cherry Hill Fire Department team raised over $3,800 in donations for the American Lung Association, which was greatly appreciated.

12.14.09 Two Dead in Morning Accident on Route 70

Cherry Hill Firefighters and EMTs responded to a reported motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Route 70 West & New Hampshire Ave, at around 9:30 am. Firefighters arrived with Cherry Hill Police and reported a one car accident. The vehicle had sheared off a utility pole near the ground and also struck a resident who happened to be cutting branches from a tree in his yard at the time. Firefighters and EMTs immediately began to assess both victims and secure the vehicle while operating under the snapped utility pole. As the on duty fire department Battalion Chief arrived, he immediately ordered crews to relocate the patient underneath. About 30 seconds after moving to a more secure location, a primary power line dropped across the entire area they had vacated. One victim was declared deceased on the scene by paramedics and another victim was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. This accident is under investigation by Cherry Hill Police.

Cherry Hill and Haddonfield Firefighters team up to form a detail on Cuthbert Road over Route 70. Firefighters were on hand to welcome 240 Troops from Ft.Dix who came to Cherry Hill for the 6th annual Thanksgiving dinner sponsored by the Jewish War Veterans and the Spevak family.

11.11.09 - Two Alarm Fire Critically Injures 2 & Displaces 20 People

At just after 0200 am, Cherry Hill Firefightetrs responded to a reported building fire at the Woods II development, located on Hickory Circle, near the Kresson & Evesham Roads intersection. Dispatchers advised responders they received numerous reports of fire with people trapped in a first floor apartment. First arriving crews reported heavy fire in the first floor apartments, extending to the second floor and roof area. One fire victim had self-extricated prior to fire department arrival. As additional crews arrived, large fire attack lines were stretched to both floors. Interior search crews located a fire victim in the first floor unit and rescued her. Crews were assisted by Cherry Hill Police with finishing the evacuation of the building. Both victims were treated on scene by Cherry Hill Fire Department EMTs and transported to Cooper Hospital in Camden.

Firefighters advanced their mulitple attack lines on this rapidly advancing fire. Additional mutual aid units were called to assist with the amount of evacuations necessary in the complex. The original companies on location made good progress on the advancing fire, by making aggressive stands at strategic points in the building. The additional personnel assisted with extensive overhaul of the four (4) units on fire, checking for any fire extension. All visible fire was extinguished in approximately 40 minutes.

All evacuated residents were relocated to nearby units while awaiting the Red Cross for temporary lodging. Ten (10) displaced residents were being placed at the Holiday Inn temporarily. The other residents made their own arrangements for lodging.

The intial investigation found the fire to have originated in a bedroom of a first floor unit, but the cause remains under investigation by the Cherry Hill Fire Marshal's office with the assitance of the Camden County Fire Marshal's office. The two injuried ciivilians from the fire, originally transported to Cooper Hospital in Camden, and transferred to Temple Hospital in Philadelphia. No emergency personnel were injured at this incident.

11.7.09 House Fire in Woodland Neighborhood

At 10:28 P.M. Cherry Hill Firefighters were dispatched to a fire located in the 300 block of Lincoln Avenue. The first arriving company found an advanced fire condition on the first floor of the two-story dwelling. The occupants had evacuated prior to fire department arrival. Two hose lines were quickly stretched to the interior of the dwelling and the fire was contained to the first and second floors. Fire had travelled into the home's walls and ceilings, requiring extensive efforts by firefighters on scene. The dwelling suffered fire damage on the first and second floors.

It took about 25 firefighters just 30 minutes to place this fire under control. Cherry Hill Police Department resources were utilized for traffic control measures, and assistance from the Cherry Hill Fire Police and the Cherry Hill Fire Department Rehab units were provided. All occupants of the property have been displaced. The preliminary cause is accidental, related to a clothes dryer, but this incodent remains under investigation by the Cherry Hill Fire Marshal’s Office.

9.20.09 Early Afternoon Car Fire

At just before 3 pm on Sunday, September 20th, 2009, Cherry Hill Firefighters were just clearing from another incident and were dispatched to a reported car fire on Cuthbert Road, near Hampton. Firefighters arrived to find a vehicle fully involved in fire. A hose line was deployed and the fire was extinguished in just a couple minutes. This fire is under investigation by the Cherry Hill Fire Marshal's Office.

9.17.09 Accident Traps One, Backs Up Traffic for Hours

At just before 11:00 AM, on Thursday, September 17, 2009, Cherry Hill Firefighters and EMTs were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on West Route 70 near Donahue Ave. An EMS supervisor was first to arrive and advised incoming units the accident involved one vehicle that had taken down a utility pole with multiple power lines down, a traffic light standard was in the roadway, and one victim was trapped in the vehicle, which ended up just a couple feet from a home located just off the roadway. Witnesses later said the car, which was travelling east bound, had flipped several times before coming to a stop.

Firefighters and EMTs stabilized the vehicle and used hydraulic rescue tools to free the victim, which took about ten minutes. The victim was transported by Cherry Hill Fire Department ambulance to the Trauma Center at Cooper Hospital in Camden. Traffic in the area had to be re-routed for several hours as firefighters and utility crews worked to clean up the roadway in conjunction with Department of Transportation personnel. This accident is under investigation by the Cherry Hill Police Department.

In 2009, by the end of August, we have already lost 69 firefighters who have answered their last call and we recognize their service and sacrifice. Equally, we recognize the continued commitment, dedication and ultimate devotion to public safety we witness every day by Firefighters, EMTs, Police and all emergency workers around the world, and especially here in America. The two wildland firefighters who recently lost their lives during their battle to quell the severe wildland fires in California on August 30th remind us to always be safe in what we do. In addition, we recognize the accomplishments of the thousands of military personnel who continue to fight for our freedom, the cost of which has come at a high price for them and their familes.

We hope that you will take a minute to remember the efforts of those at Ground Zero six years ago, and know that the Cherry Hill Fire Department recognizes those efforts every day as we prepare and train, ensuring we are ready to respond to your emergency.

Southhampton Technical Rescue

On Thursday, August 27, 2009 the Cherry Hill Fire Department's Technical Rescue team responded to Southampton Township, in Burlington County, for a report of a worker trapped in a trench. When they arrived, members of the rescue team encountered a worker that was trapped up to his waste in a trench that was 3 feet wide, 6 feet long and 8 feet deep. Rescue team members immediately began to protect the worker from further collapse by using wooden panels and Paratech shores. The rescue teams had to deal with Type C soil (soil that is very granular and had water free flowing through it) almost like an hour glass. This is the most dangerous type of soil to work in or around, making the chance of a secondary collapse extremely high. The Cherry Hill Rescue team along with rescue teams from across Burlington County and the New Jersey State Urban Search and Rescue Team, NJ-TF1, worked for over five hours in extreme heat to free the trapped worker. Once freed, the worker was flown to Cooper Trauma Center in Camden where he is expected to make a full recovery.

6.15.09 Workman's Torch Ignites House Fire

At just before 1:00 PM on Wednesday, June 15th, 2009, Cherry Hill Firefighters and EMTs responded to a reported house fire in the 700 block of Cooper Landing Road. Reports from dispatchers indicated Cherry Hill Police were on location reporting a well advanced fire in the rear of the dwelling. Police also reported several small explosions occurring.

First arriving firefighters encountered fire in the rear of a two story dwelling under construction. The fire, which started in a second floor bedroom of the dwelling, was quickly spreading to adjacent rooms and into the attic. The fire was spreading rapidly due to the fact that many walls had been removed or opened as part of the renovation occurring inside the dwelling. Two teams of firefighters quickly deployed separate hand lines to extinguish the fire. Simultaneously, other teams of firefighters worked to open doors and windows to ventilate the home, alleviating the high heat and heavy smoke conditions inside. Additionally, firefighters quickly pulled ceilings on the second floor to search for fire extension in the attic. Fire extension was found in the attic as well and extinguished.

Also, even though this home was reported as unoccupied, a systematic search was conducted of all areas to ensure no workers or any occupant was left inside. All occupants were confirmed out of the fire building. In all, about 25 firefighters were called on to fight this fire which was placed under control in about 25 minutes. There were no injuries to emergency workers or civilians reported at the scene. The Cherry Hill Fire Marshal’s Office has made an initial determination that this fire started as a result of a plumber’s torch igniting the interior wall framing and spread quickly because of the construction. Also, the explosions heard were determined to be a portable propane tank and some other construction related equipment and not a cause of the fire which remains an open investigation.
